When enabling batch-wise tracking for items that already have stock, it’s crucial to ensure that the stock count of the first batch matches the current stock count of the item. This is essential to maintain accurate inventory records and prevent data inconsistencies.

Example:

Let’s say you have an item called "Potato Chips" with a current stock of 320 packs. Up until now, no tracking method has been enabled for this item:

If you decide to enable batch-wise tracking for "Potato Chips," the opening stock of the first batch you create must match the current stock of the item. For instance:

  • Current stock of "Potato Chips": 320 packs
  • Opening stock of the first batch: 320 packs

This ensures that the transition to batch-wise tracking is seamless and accurate.

Why Is This Necessary?

If you enable batch-wise tracking for existing items without aligning the stock counts, it can lead to data corruption. Here’s why:

  • Items without a tracking method and those with batch-wise tracking cannot co-exist without causing discrepancies.
  • By matching the stock count of the first batch to the current stock, you ensure that all inventory data of that particular item is aligned under the same tracking method.
  • It ensures that all stock (both current and new) is accounted for under the same system, preventing errors in tracking & reporting.
